Throughout this course we have discussed aspects of media in our society and ways in which we communicate through media, and most recently, communicating throughout social media. After reading chapters 16 and 17, you should have a better understanding of the ethical contributions within media and of how we can communicate through social media on a global scale.
Instructions
After reading chapters 16 and 17, use your favorite search engine to learn about how social media can create social change by searching the phrase “social media and social movements.” Research some real-world examples of social movements that have been started through social media (an example would be the KONY 2012 campaign). After doing so, write a short, one-page essay answering the following questions:
Briefly describe one real-world example of a social movement that was started through social media (feel free to use the KONY 2012 example). What was this movement called? What social media site did it start on?
How did social media create social change regarding this movement?
How did social media influence collective behavior for others to support this social movement?
How can you verify this movement’s truthfulness and accuracy? In other words, how do we make sure the movement is not fake, being used to spread a false narrative or idea?
Please be sure to include a title page, use citations and references throughout, including your textbook and any websites you utilize to conduct your research. This essay should be a minimum of one page and a maximum of three pages long.
