1. Download and install the TCP/IP packet capture program https://www.wireshark.org/
2. Decide on a website of your choice for which you will capture and analyze TCP/IP traffic streams and identify the URL of your selected website (e.g., https://www.ibm.com).
3. Overview
Each protocol in the TCP/IP stack uses a specialized packet to transmit and receive data and protocol-specific information at its layer of the protocol stack. For example, there is the TCP segment packet at the TCP layer and there is the IP datagram packet at the IP layer that encapsulates or includes the TCP segment as its data. Packet capture programs like Wireshark allow us to capture these TCP/IP packets as frames from a network interface card that is connected to the Internet. More importantly, these packet capture programs enable us to analyze TCP/IP traffic and examine the networking information therein.
In this assignment, you will use Wireshark to capture and analyze the DNS, IP, and TCP packets of the traffic streams associated with browsing a website of your choice. You will document your capture and analysis with screenshots highlighting the key information analyzed. You will also explain what you did, interpret the result of your analysis, and reflect on this learning experience in a one-page written summary.
Instructions
Start the TCP/IP packet capture program Wireshark.
Configure Wireshark Time Display Format to display time as “Date and Time of Day” as follows: View > Time Display Format > Date and Time of Day
Do not use the default configuration of Time Display Format as “Seconds Since the Beginning of Capture.”
Start Wireshark Capture on your network interface that is connected to the Internet.
In a web browser window, type in the URL of your chosen website and hit ENTER to browse to the website.
Stop Wireshark Capture after a few seconds.
Analyze the Wireshark frame that encapsulates the DNS query about your chosen URL to identify:
The IP address of your network interface as the source IP address.
The URL of your chosen website.
The DNS Queries part of the frame.
1. Screenshot your identified frame, similar to figure 1.a (included), below. On the screenshot, highlight the IP address of your network interface as the source IP address, the URL of your chosen website, and the DNS Queries part of the frame.
2. Analyze the Wireshark frame that encapsulates the DNS response to the query about your chosen URL to identify:
The IP address of your network interface as the destination IP address.
The URL of your chosen website.
The DNS Answers part of the frame.
Screenshot your identified frame, similar to Figure 1.b (included), below. On the screenshot, highlight the IP address of your network interface as the destination IP address, the URL of your chosen website, and the DNS Answers part of the frame.
3. Analyze the Wireshark frame that encapsulates the TCP handshake’s first SYN TCP segment from your network interface to your chosen URL to identify:
The header checksum in the IP packet.
The source IP address, the destination IP address in the IP packet.
The source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
Screenshot your identified frame, similar to figure 2.a (included) below. On the n screenshot, highlight the header checksum, the source IP address, and the destination IP address in the IP packet. Clearly highlight on the screenshot the source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
4. Analyze the Wireshark frame that encapsulates the TCP handshake’s SYN, ACK TCP segment from your chosen URL to your network interface to identify:
The header checksum in the IP packet.
The source IP address, the destination IP address in the IP packet.
The source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
Screenshot your identified frame, similar to that shown in Figure 2.b (included) below. On the screenshot, highlight the header checksum, the source IP address, and the destination IP address in the IP packet. Clearly highlight on the screenshot the source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
5. Analyze the Wireshark frame that encapsulates the TCP handshake’s last ACK TCP segment from your chosen URL to your network interface to identify:
The header checksum in the IP packet.
The source IP address, the destination IP address in the IP packet.
The source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
Screenshot your identified frame, similar to that shown in Figure 2.c (included) below. On the screenshot, highlight the header checksum, the source IP address, and the destination IP address in the IP packet. Clearly highlight on the screenshot the source port number and the destination port number in the TCP packet.
6. Submit the following:
The screenshots you took. The screenshots should be labeled, in the same order as these instructions, and highlighted to identify the requested analysis information.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I get my paper done?

It depends with your deadline. If you need your paper completed in 3 hours, we will deliver it in that time. All you need to do is indicate your deadline in our custom order page here. Alternatively, if you are sending us your instructions via email, please be sure to indicate your deadline.

Will it be completely original? I don't want to be caught in a case of Academic Integrity Violation.

We are as paranoid as you are. Maybe even more! And we understand that the greatest sin you can commit in your academic journey is plagiarizing your academic work. To that end, we have made sure that we check and double-check our papers using high quality plagiarism detection tools such as SafeAssign and Turnitin before submitting the paper to you.

Who is my writer? Is he/she a native English Speaker?

All our writers are native English Speakers. That is not to say that ESL writers are not good, we just prefer hiring native writers because we want the very best people working on your paper. This might mean paying a little bit more for your paper as opposed to when you pay a foreign company whose writers are non-native English Speakers.

What if I need revisions? Will your charge additional for this?

Of course not! If you do happen to require a revision on your paper, our team will handle it for you free of charge. Matter of fact, we won’t rest till you are happy with your paper. So, ask for as many revisions as you need, it’s completely FREE!

Will you give me my money back if I don't like my paper?

We have very few instances where we delivered a paper that a client didn’t fall in love with. But if it so happens that you don’t like your paper for any reason whatsoever, we’ll refund your money back no questions asked.

I have more assignments after this, can you help me with those too?

Of course! And what’s even better is that we can reserve a writer permanently to work on your entire class. This comes in handy for projects which build up on each other and where you need just one writer, one writing style.

I got my order information wrong, can I change that?

Yes you can. Just reach out to our support team via email (support@essaynook.com) or live chat here and they’ll help you change the instructions.

Can I place an order via email instead of going through the order page?

Yes you can. Email Anna at anna@essaynook.com, she’s in charge of our sales team. Alternatively, you can talk to our Live Chat team here and request to speak to Anna.
