Part A: Conduct an Expert Review of a Web Site
For this part:
Conduct a usability test in the form of an expert review of the Penny Juice site www.pennyjuice.com. Use Nielsen’s 1995 article, “10 Usability Heuristics for User Interface Design,” https://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/ To give you a frame of reference for your expert review, pretend you are a customer of Penny Juice. As the parent of an active 8-year-old planning a children’s birthday party, your goal is to have 96 ounces of orange-pineapple juice available for the guests.
Go through the user flow of the site to find the product you are looking for and pretend to order it.
Stop short of entering personal and payment information.
Use your experience performing this task to help you complete the usability evaluation.
Your expert review of the Penny Juice Web site should:
Articulate best practices for layout and style.
Demonstrate how human factors should shape interface design.
Part B: Create a One-Page Test Plan
Use Travis’s “1-Page Usability Test Plan or to re-create this content.
Return your focus to your own prototype (instead of the Web site for Part A). For this part:
Create a usability test plan that would—if you performed it—predict the quality of your users’ experience with your own online food ordering system.
Write your plan on the Word document you already started for Part A. Travis, in the “1-Page Usability Test Plan,” describes an agile, one-page test plan that can help you think through the process of testing your food ordering user experience design.
Think carefully through the areas described in the plan, and develop a summary of a test plan that will work for the food ordering system. Required categories include:
Product under test.
Test objectives.
Participants.
Test tasks.
Responsibilities.
Business case.
Equipment.
Location and dates.
Procedure
Part C: Explore Strategies for Cross-Cultural and Mobile Platform Design
Write a reflection on the following topics.
Mobile Applications
Be sure to address both of the topics below:
​​Describe best design methods for converting your Web-based application into a mobile application. Consider what it would take to convert your Web-based food ordering system to a mobile platform.
What are some of the challenges you face in converting a Web-based application to a mobile application in terms of user experience design?
How is the user experience likely to be impacted if the food ordering system is delivered on a mobile platform?
Describe key human factors that should be considered when converting a Web­-based application into a mobile application. In your analysis, address at least three of the human factors you explore in this course, as well as accessibility considerations.​
Cultural Differences
Assume you have converted your food ordering system to a mobile platform, and the restaurant owner has decided to open an identical restaurant in rural Russia.
Describe additional changes you would make to your user interface design to address the needs of a new persona that is part of Russian culture, and to provide an engaging user experience.​
Accounting for Human Factors
The development of products and systems for use by humans presents a unique set of challenges, many of which involve human factors that must be considered in the design process. The Designing With the Mind in Mind text discusses a wide variety of human factors and how they should be taken into account during design.
Reflect on your experience with user interfaces and the design work you completed as part of this course. What do you feel are the most important elements of designing for human users that you will be sure to take forward with you in your IT career? Address some of the following topics (your choice):
The implications of past experience, current context, and future goals of your user groups for the design of a system.
The influence that your own experiences and context might have on your design choices, and preferences you might have for a good interface that may not be true for others.
The Gestalt principles and their impact on user interface design.
Visual structure of a system and its impact on user experience.
Useful and important roles of color in the design of an interactive experience.
Information display and reading, and attention span in the user’s physical environment, as well as memory and behavioral patterns.
Factors regarding human recognition and recall, support for user activities, and facilitation of human learning.
